The Women's & Gender Studies undergraduate program, founded in the early seventies, is one of the oldest in the nation. Currently, the program has over 200 majors and minors and serves over 1900 students annually in a wide array of core and cross-listed courses. The major, approved in 1984, introduces students to significant issues and debates in feminist scholarship, theory, and activism.

All courses are interdisciplinary and each considers the complex dynamics among race, ethnicity, locality, class, gender, and sexuality. The readings and discussions in each class represent a wide variety of women's perspectives concerning issues such as: the conceptualization of difference, the production and recreation of femininity and masculinity, language and gender, the division of labor, women and poverty, sexual violence, reproductive rights, gay and lesbian theory, gender and popular theory, and contemporary feminist politics. Ultimately, we strive to ground both research and theory in the everyday realities of feminist activism around the globe. Women’s & Gender Studies program faculty, students and staff are active members and leaders of academic and community women’s organizations.
The WGS alumnae pursue their professional career in various fields. One-fifth of our graduates continue their education in graduate programs in different fields (political science, English, law) around the country. Many alumnae also engage in work in the area of health and pharmacy (about one fourth). Others choose law (one-fifth of the alumnae), education (one fourth) media or computer studies. Many WGS graduates continue their activist work in non-governmental organizations that engage with women and work, international politics and women’s leadership.

Majoring in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies can take you where you want to go!
Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies interrogates knowledge and power in order to build a more just world. Our degrees train students how to identify, analyze, and dismantle structural inequalities and the key ways they materialize: as gender, race, sexuality, class, and related ideas of difference. We engage with history, culture, politics, society, religion, philosophy and other aspects of human life, both drawing on these disciplines and extending beyond their limits. We cultivate transformative practices of research, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Our classes emphasize the feminist methodology of intersectionality, which is the practice of interrogating power by placing the most marginalized at the center of our intellectual endeavor and our daily efforts to create a more equitable world. The major provides students with key tools: how to interrogate power, how to engage the challenges of contemporary life, and how to fight for social transformation and social justice.

In April 2018, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department was recognized as the Epsilon Beta Chapter of the National Women's and Gender Studies Honor Society Iota, Iota, Iota!
Iota Iota Iota (Triota), is a National Women's Studies Honor Society with over 50 chapters nationwide. The Greek letter, iota, was selected for the name to represent the three goddesses Inanna, Ishtar, and Isis. Iota Iota Iota strives to maintain the feminist values central to Women's Studies and encourage diversity, egalitarianism, and a supportive academic environment for all students.
The purpose of Triota is to promote interest in Women's Studies, and research in social problems affecting all women. This society also encourages volunteerism, advocacy, and activism within the community as important methods for promoting and maintaining the feminist values central to Women's Studies.
HOW TO JOIN OUR CHAPTER
Requirements:
- Majors or minors in WGSS (including minors in Critical Sexualities, Social Justice, and Gender and Media
- Have taken 2 WGSS courses (including cross-listed courses),
- A GPA of 3.0 or above in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Courses

The Epsilon Beta Chapter, TRIOTA at Rutgers University, Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies held its first induction ceremony in May 2018 with 24 members to recognize the academic achievements of students in Women's Studies.
WGSS would like to thank the leadership of two of our alumnae Pamela Hernandez (President, Spring 2018) and Nainika Paul (Vice President, Spring 2018) for their hard work and dedication in seeing this initiative come to fruition.
