Sam (they/them) graduated with a BA in political theory from the University of California, Berkeley. They focus on transgender and queer studies and prison studies. In their current research, they are examining sexual violence and sexual freedom in American prisons, focusing on the experiences of queer, transgender, and women-identified inmates, and inmates of color, using a queer theoretical framework. They are also interested in the roles of addiction and recovery in incarceration and prison abolitionism. They are increasingly exploring visual cultures in their research and have a background working in cinematography. Sam worked as Director of Operations at the Young Women's Freedom Center in San Francisco, CA for the past two years, an organization that seeks to support system-involved youth, women, nonbinary, and transgender people in their process of self-liberation.
