01:888:338 Transnational Sexualities

This course examines the relationship between sexuality and recent forms of nationalism, globalization, migration, imperialism and colonial/post-colonial histories. It will interrogate various dynamics of heterosexuality, but its primary focus will be queer and LGBTQ communities and issues.

Course Objectives

  • To examine how constructions of the nation are established through regulation of and discourse on sexuality
  • To examine the relationship between concepts of citizenship and norms of sexuality & gender
  • To develop a deeper understanding of the wide range of discourses and frameworks which exists for interpreting sexuality & gender internationally
  • To examine the ways in which global dynamics of communication & cultural exchange, travel & leisure, trade & commerce, wars & militarism, etc. all structure sexuality on the local, national and international scale
