Internships

The 6-credit internship program in Women's & Gender Studies (988:425) integrates feminist theory and gender-based activism. Students work in community placements for 10-12 hours each week and participate in a weekly seminar to explore the connections between theory and practice. The course is open to Women’s & Gender Studies majors, minors, and to students from other departments who have done coursework in Women’s & Gender Studies.

PLACEMENTS

Placements are available at a wide range of community sites. In past years, internships have been hosted by the New Jersey Women and AIDS Network, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, the Center for American Women and Politics, the National Center for the Pro-Choice Majority, the Women’s Rights Information Center, and Ms. magazine. Students are also encouraged to work with the course instructor to design internships that reflect their particular interests.

SEMINAR

The seminar gives students the opportunity to reflect critically on their internship experiences. Class topics will include: different kinds of women’s activism; feminist movements and the state; leadership, power, and hierarchy; the role of women’s and gender studies in women’s movements; and identity politics in feminist organizations. The seminar emphasizes theory as a tool to understand activist experiences, and practice as a challenge to theoretical frameworks.

REGISTRATION

You can only register for this course with a special permission number from Women’s & Gender Studies. Come to Women’s & Gender Studies to talk with an advisor about your interests and an internship proposal. Pick up an Internship Packet, which will include proposal and contract forms, and an outline of the course. Information on placements is available in the Women’s & Gender Studies office. Once you have selected some possible sites, contact the placements and arrange interviews. We can help with guidance on developing a résumé if needed. Once you are accepted by a placement, submit your internship proposal to Women’s & Gender Studies. You will then get a special permission number. Come by the Women’s & Gender Studies office (162 Ryders Lane, Ruth Dill Johnson Crockett Building, 2nd Floor) or call Ethel Brooks at 848- 932-8402 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
