01:988:302 Feminist Theory: Contemporary Engagements

Theory is a practice that helps one to make sense of one’s questions and situation.  Feminist theory does this with attention focused on the interrelated categories of gender, race and class.  Part of the challenge and fun of feminist theory is to do analyses of gender, race, and class simultaneously.  It’s like a three-dimensional chess game, but if it isn’t done that way, I don’t think it’s honest theory.  We also have to take into account the fact that all theory, like speech, uses language.  In the case of theory, written language is used.  Writing is subject to all sorts of interesting, multivalent and contradictory meanings.  Difference, in my thinking the crucial concept for not only feminist theory but also for most theory, is at the heart of writing and our work.
